I posted this in the Massey forum as well. I thought maybe someone in here may have some input on this situation as well. So far this problem has every mechanic and Massey dealer just scratching their head.

The tractor is a Massey 1135 with a 6 cyl perkins diesel

On and off all year long I've been having problems with diesel fuel getting into the crank case. So much so that it flows right out the dipstick. Sometimes it will go two weeks before the fuel comes flowing out, and other times just a day or two.
I put a new lift pump on and that didn't seem to do the trick, so I bought a new injection pump. Still getting fuel in the oil.

Thinking that possibly the cam lobe for the lift pump was wore and causing the pump arm to move side to side, I replaced the lift pump with a 5-8 lb electric pump that I hooked up to only come on when the engine is running.

Still getting fuel in the oil. I called the local Massey dealer and all they can do is scratch their heads. Anyone out there run into this before? Any Ideas?

The tractor runs excellent, just likes it's diesel oil mixture.

I also changed the base of the injection pump thinking that the bushing might be wore.

The only thing left is the injectors and the tractor isn't missing on any cylinder. What am I missing?

Bad thermostarts, bad injectors cause diesel to get into the crankcase, but they also cause poor running and/or smoke. Unblock the pressure bleed orifice in the banjo bolt on top of one of the diesel filters and give it a try, usually does the trick.

Before you put a whole set of injectors in it check the thermostart intake manifold heater, if this tractor has one. If it uses the heater with a fuel supply line to it (seems like they are on everything but IH and some really big stuff) that heater unit's check ball can fail and allows diesel to drain right out of the system straight into the intake and then down into the engine. Seen this at least a dozen times coming into the shop here, and have yet to see a crankcase filled by a faulty injector. I know it can happen but just hasnt been in here yet.

You have a bad injector.Pull and have checked. If it goes to long it can wash down the cylinder wall and cause galling to the piston and cylinder wall!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to take the injectors out and see if I can get them serviced. I'm hoping that this cures my problems and I'm not dealing with poor compression or something else.

Thanks Again,
Wayne

Look no further than a poor injector. It is not common but the symptoms suggect that.

I'd say it's a bad injector. If you've changed the injection pump, that ~should~ have eliminated the possibility of a bad shaft seal on the pump. I don't know how the lift pump is run on the 354, but you changed it so it should be OK? That just leaves a bad injector. I think I'd pull them all and have the set serviced. Also make sure you don't have a moisture problem in the system It would be somewhat odd for an injector to go bad unless it's got some hours on it.... You do keep the fuel filter changed on a fairly regular basis (yearly)? Those pumps do not like water.

If your getting a lot of black smoke the fuel could be running down by the pistons and getting in the oil. Now as to how that engine fires is because it has very high compression. High enough in fact that the air in the cylinder becomes super heated and when the fuel is sprayed in through the injector it ignites. All that glow plugs would do is to preheat the head some to help with ignition. Just the same as a block heater would or an intake grate heater.

The black smoke should tell that its injector problems. One of the injectors is not spraying, but pouring fuel. Pull injectors and check for spraying of fuel.

Good Luck

The last time I heard what your explaining, the gentleman had a cracked block on the tractor. I hope that"s not the case, but it definately has me stumped!! Let us know if you figure it out.

A cracked block wouldn't be good. That would put me right out of business.

I'm not getting any oil in the radiator and not getting any coolant in the oil. I'm not sure how a cracked block would allow diesel in the oil, but then again I'm not a diesel expert by any means.

I am getting alot of black smoke, the turbo seems to be working ok. Sort of wondering if maybe it's over fueling somehow, maybe injector problems.

I know there is no glow plugs, I have no idea how this thing fires..Friction?

Change out the injectors. You should be good. It sounds as if they are popping off too early and running too much fuel. This would answer the smoke. Extreme amounts of fuel could damage pistons by hydraulic lock. Your compression would be high due to the fluid in the dome of the piston.
