I was thinking about getting another haybine, are the 499 good machines? What about the hydraulic motors do they last as long as the machine or do they give trouble? Not buying new just looking for a good used one or maybe a 488. Wha do I need to look for on these machines? Not many of them around here,I am about the only one who uses them but I do like the crimping . Currently I have a NH 461 and IH 990,looking to upgrade. Thanks

I have run 2 different 499's over the past 12-13 years and I love them. The first one was a well-used one I bought cheap and fixed it up. It had some issues with a cutterbar that was wavy but it still worked well - I just had to replace the cutting parts more often. 10 years ago I purchased a brand-new one and I'm still running that now, putting 200-300 acres a year thru it. So far, only normal maintenance (cutting parts and filters on the hydraulic drive system). My first 499 had rebuilt skid plates on it so when I bought the new 499 I bought plastic skids from May-Wes and installed them over the new skids to take the wear instead of the steel skid. They just wore thru this year so they helped a lot. They still make the 499 to this day so in a few years I will trade again for a new one - I won't even look at any other brand or model of haybine!
