Hauling NI 305 Mounted Picker

How much of a nightmare would it be to load and haul a 2-row mounted picker that's not mounted on a tractor?

I can get a decent deal on a New Idea 305 2-row, but would have to haul home AND unload the thing without it mounted. Do they come apart enough to make loading easy? Thanks for the help.

I have just hauled 2 of them in the past month. On both of them I removed the front snout, screen and the curved pipe that connects the 2 halves of the gathering unit. Then its a simple task to lift each half onto a trailer, letting the halves sit down on the trailer parallel to the trailer bed. They "nest" up against each other really well and its fairly easy to strap them down this way. I was able to haul a complete 319 Gathering Unit, 322 12-roll husking bed and the universal frame on a 24 foot gooseneck trailer with enough room left to haul a sheller unit if there had been one. I have also seen a cart like the previous poster described but unless it has good bearings and tires I wouldn't want to haul the gathering unit on it for any great distance. I plan to build one of these carts, mainly for the purpose of being able to move a complete gathering unit around the yard without having to mount it on the tractor.

FWIW years ago I saw a homemade cart type of mount that allowed mounted pickers to be rolled on small wheelbarrow type wheels. It takes some welding and steel cutting to fit the picker. Another way would be to hire a boom truck to lift it onto your trailer. Be sure to brace the upper end of the snapping roll housings together so they do not pull toward each other when lifting.
