NH 311...what is its equivalent?

I found a NH311 that looks very well cared and is priced reasonably. Im trying to figure out whether this machine is a low or medium capacity baler. The dealer had no idea what the modern equivalent would be. Is this like the 570, 565 or somewhere in between?

I read thru the baler postings here and while its held in very high regard theres little about what thru put might be.

I believe it also doesnt have SuperSweep which I really wanted. Is it possible to retrofit that option to this baler?

i have a 311 and my neighbor has a 316. one summer we were both baling some straw in the same field, and i was keeping up with him without really pushing my baler. i'd jump at one that was reasonably priced if i needed a baler.

I really appreciate all the input!

As I said in my original posting I really wanted SuperSweep b/c I think its going to leave my fields cleaner which translates into more hay baled. How many of you all running the 311 have SS? Also who does their own baler repairs?

mine has super sweep. its especially good on 2nd cutting/fine hay. on 1st cutting, i'd think it would be less of an issue. i don't know how much of your hay would be 2nd. i replace bearings, fix other small stuff. fortunately, i haven't had major problems with balers to need to call in an expert.

Hi Bill
Im planning multiple cuts on my Bermuda so I think SS will be the ticket as w/ 2nd cut on the OG/legume. It wouldve been necessary this yr for sure b/c it was so dry and 2nd cut so thin.

Good to know youve not run into any major issues w/ the baler. In addition to the parts replaced have you had to make any timing adjustments w/ the knotter or feed system?

no timing problems so far with the 311. you might try pricing a ss pickup from fry's machinery in pa. 570-546-3968. he parts out a lot of nh.

Im sure this machine doesnt have SuperSweep as it has 4 sets of 10 tines. I believe the supersweep have 6 sets of 19 or 20 so SS must have been an option.

So this baler was in the 316, 326 line...that makes it the low end. Ive also read here how highly regarded those mdls are. Guess any would do but Im trying to find one close to home to keep transport costs down.

Thanx again for the help!!

We have had one for years now.It will spit out bales faster than three guys on the wagon can keep up(run it with a IH 584).Never had to do anything major to it.Quantum leap up from the NH 66 we had before, although that was a good baler too,and it went through a fire in '76.

Hey Jim- The 311, 316, and 326 were the trio of the NH early 80"s balers. 311 was the smallest but was still a good capacity baler. All three were/are very reliable. A farmer I know has one that bales 20,000 bales per year for as long as I can remember. It"s modern day "equal" would probably be the 565. I"m not 100% sure, but I thought all balers of that era had the supersweep pickup. At least, I have never seen one without supersweep.

I have one that I bought brand new in 1987. The brochure that came with it stated that it was a semi commercial. I have not used it in 3 years but have the only parts that have every been replaced are the spring to the bale counter. Probably baled around 20,000 bales with it. The only problem I ever had was if you didn't oil the chains good, they will jump off.
