Currently I grow sudangrass and forage sorghum for silage. I used my forage harvester with the row crop header to chop it, however I am getting too much water into the silo. I decide that next growing season I will mow the sorghum and then use the pick-up header to chop it. Do you think that a 472 haybine is a good mower conditioner for this task? Do the rubber rolls can handle this task. I have no experience with mower conditioners, so I appreciate all the advice and comments.

Thanks for the comments. It is a good point that maybe the pick-up won't might have problems. I will make some tests in the farm and see how it goes. Usually I allow the sorghum to grow to 6-8 feet, however I think I will have to mow it approximately at 4-8 ft.

I think I will get a Haybine 472. It a small machine, so the windrows won't be that big and maybe the pick-up will work ok.

Thanks

I have seen Green Graze six feet tall cut with a old almost worn out New Holland Haybine. It went right on through it. I have cut sorghum with a Hesston sickle mower conditioner. Dont remember the model of either one. I don't remember just how we adjusted them, But we moved the push over bar and adjusted the reel and they worked pretty good for old machines that are considered by some to have been worthless.

How tall is the stuff? We grow some brome, and we let it grow to almost 4' before we decided that we weren't going to get enough sun to bale the stuff,so we decided to chop it.BIG MISTAKE.The crop pulled in the machine right to the tractor drawbar. It would continually wrap in the feed rolls and go on to cut off the shear pins.We then got decided we had better make baleage out of it.We have a 781 ih chopper, and it wouldn't handel the long hay, just pulled it in bunches.Just somthing to think about.pd.

I grow sudan grass for hay, when cut young it makes great hay and you get several cuttings. I use a haybine and it works great just crank the rollers as tight as you can get them

my first thought was that the pick up header will have a hard time picking the heavier materials up. i don't think that will work. never done it but just don't see it happening.
