Disk Moco throwing rocks!

Hit a real gravely field the other day and got my rear window all broke up, it has happened a few times through the years even though my deck curtain is in good shape. Am I the only guy this happens to? Sure glad I don't mow in an open station.

Worst thing I have hit with my disc mower is a golf ball. They leave a nice black eye.

You're not the only one that it's happenned to. I broke out a full length side window on my JD tractor this summer. I thought for a second that somebody was shooting at me!! In an instant, the glass went from one piece to a million pieces!

Get yourself some angle iron, and expanded steel. Cover the back, and side windows with it. I have seen right of way mowing tractors in our area with these "covers" that don"t really affect your vision, but protect the glass.

I'd think that it would need to be an awful small mesh expanded metal to stop the rocks we're talking about here. These are generally just chips off a rock no bigger than a pebble.
The best solution is to keep GOOD safety glass in the cab. It'll slow the rock enough that it probably won't kill you when it hits you... and the glass will just shatter and fall.
That's the game with discbines. You can keep the angle up some, but there's always that chance....
That's the reason that the OEM's do not recomend that open station tractors be used to power discbines. At least the glass will protect the operator in a cab.

I try to keep my cutter bar angle such that the blades clear the rocks. Knock on wood never broke a glass or been hit by anything yet except dirt from a ground hog mound.

how would a piece of plywood over the rear window with a few small slots cut in it work. it could be just simply hung over the rear lights with a string. we keep a piece of plywood stuck in behind the seat on my 574 when bush hogging rough stuff. guess thats why i cracked the ear off the gear box huh?

Bought a new 3 pt. disk mower when they first hit the NH dealers . I remember telling the salesman they should through in a hard hat and safty goggles with it . I pulled it with a IH 574 . The only thing I liked about it was narrow transport and it did do a good job of mowing but was a pain to hook up and the least little steering movment would cause a big crooked spot in the field that would keep getting worse and we dont have a field with one straigh side . I traded back for a MoCo and have been happy , I can still run as fast as I want to go , could run faster .
