did the u joint break out one of the holes that holds the bearings in place? if that all that happened i have taken my parts to a place that build drive shafts for cars and truck, have them cut the old holders off and weld a new u joint onto the splined portion that goes on the mower shaft. they put it in a lath and true it up as they weld it. worked on several different drives for me. actually welded one up on a baler on a sunday to beat a rain just out in the field and made it the rest of the day.

it's really a flail mower. frail means sickly.

Thanks to all who responded, my local IH dealer had the end piece that I needed to make it work, funny how the local John Deere dealer didn't even offer to look,
