JD 490 Corn Planter

I recently purchased a 490 four row corn planter. I was in very good condition with little rust and was told it planted fine a few years ago. I am having some issues with the power lift and trip levers. When I am pulling the planter and pull the lever forward, nothing happens. I am new to the power lift thing. I am used to lifting a planter with the hydros in the cab of the tractor and watching the planter raise and lower. What should I be watching for to correct this problem?

Too much grease or old dirty hard grease will also cause it not to grip and lift. Your planter would have been made between 1942 and 1956 and can be set for only 36-38-40 or 42" rows. There are ways to roughly date the year of your planter if you want to do that.

Right now the planter is set for 36" rows. I am going to take apart the clutch and see if it's gunked up. Thanks

If the power lift is a clutch lift,I think I can help you out,Maybe.We have a 290 and every so often we have the same problem(usually when your about 3/4 of the way through planting).There is a dog (maybe two,don't have the book right here)in the clutch.When it breaks or wears down it won't catch right and either the planter won't go down,or won't come up,or,and this is the worst,it goes up and down as you go out across the field.Have to take the clutch lift apart and build up the dog with some weld and grind back to size.It's a pain in the butt,but it works.Been looking for a hydraulic lift for it,like finding hens teeth.Good luck.
