IH plow landslides

I"m replacing the original landslides on two of my IH plows, #16, and #70. Part numbers have been superceded several times, and the new ones are about 3" longer, which is good. The IH dealer also showed me some plates called "wear plates" that bolt to the rear of the landslide and ride on the furrow wall. What are these for? If attached, they would stick out farther than the edge of the shin. I"ve seen them on Super Cheif bottoms, which I have. Should I put them on? Thanks- Kevin

Thanks for the replies. It makes sense to put the wear on the cheap and easy part, but I don't understand how the plow would work properly with an additional 1/2" added to the landslide. I would think that the landslide should be inline with the edge of the shin, or slightly in. The wear plates would hang out beyond the shin, and would seem to cause a lot of drag. They're cheap, so I may give them a try. Thanks again- Kevin

Kevin: They are as Leroy describes. Some soils are far more abrasive than normal. Being able to replace that end will pay under crtain conditions

I've seen different types, some increased the thickness designed to give more wear against land in sandy soil, while others were a shoe designed to give better control of plow depth in soft soil. Your plowing conditions should dictate whether you need these.

I have seen them on other makes as well. The idea is that the back bottom corner is what always wears out first and you just replace the small part without ever having to replace the big part. They require a different type of part for the long part of the landside as for the landside that is not made for the replaceable heal. Should be cheaper in the long run. some are the same steel as the landside and others are cast.
