Trailer Model?

Here are a couple of questions for you experts out there. I have just received a trailer with John Deere running gear. It has coil springs and leaf springs in the center on front and back. I would like to know if anyone could date this trailer for me. I have no clue.
Now, where the boards would fit, will not hold a 2 inch board, so should I use a 1 inch or should I use plywood. If I use boards, I will have to run them across the trailer and not from front to back. Any suggestions?

From what you say, i can assume a lot of things. But, sometimes we are real wrong when we do that.....

You have a JD wagon (4 wheels, front set steer) running gear, correct? It has spring suspension - sometimes nice, sometimes not so good for hayracks....

You wish to make a hay rack on it? (Or a barge box???)

I'm not sure where the boards should 'fit'. That part makes me wonder what you are trying to build. or what you are starting with.

If you are making a hayrack, plywood tends to be terribly slippery for normal uses of a hayrack. I would prefer boards. I just made a hayrack floor of 5/4 ( about 1 - 1/4 inch) pressure treated decking. We also used home sawn real 1 inch planks years ago. I think the current 3/4 inch planks we buy today are too flimsy to stand up to typical hayrack use.

Please fill us in on more details of what you have & what you are doing - these are just random ideas. :)

Okay, you are correct about the make up of the trailer. JD wagon (4 wheels, front set steer) running gear. There has been a frame added to the top sometime after the original frame was produced. This makes the trailer about 18 foot long. I want to put a floor in it so that I can use it for riding in parades and such. The frame that will hold the floor is 90 inches wide by 18 foot long. It has what I call board stays on the sides of the top frame. (am I confusing everyone) I want to eventually put bus seats and sideboards on it.

I find plywood does not weather real well if this will be stored outside. If you will only have it out mostly on sunny days, the plywood probably would go the easiest for your use.

Sounds like either would work, boards or plywood. :)

If you go with planks, I would really look to see if the 5/4 inch treated or cedar decking would fit - it ends up close to an actual inch thick after planing & shrinking.....

I'm 'seeing' angle iron or some other metal that makes a frame the wood must fit inside of, including a heigth limitation. So, you are making some sense. :)
