Hi, I was wondering if there was any way on testing the coil and magneto, and coil and condensor on a old briggs and straton engine. I have made sure there was no rust on the magneto and such and i have looked to see if there was any corrosion on the points...everything looks good...just no spark. I wanted to know if you can test these things by using a multimeter or something, thanks.

That is exactly what I do with each mower I fix..... .I buy a new magnatron electronic coil and put it on..... .it saves all the trouble of the points and condenser for around 30 bucks..... ..that is the only way to go with those briggs in my book..... ..

chances are the condensor is bad...99% of the time thats what i found wrong...Briggs engine designs havent changed much over the years...a later model Magnetron electronic ignition coil off a similar sized engine will bolt right on and you wont be cussin that flywheel trying to get it off every spring to clean points and or replacing condensor...your call.

Do a search for information on the garden tractor or small engine sites I remember I got all the data on the magneto gap and what the resistance of a good coil should be off one of those sites

I always get my 8 year old son to put his tounge on the end of spark plug wire and yell out "hey Yall watch this" and give the pull cord a good yank. If he wets his pants, the coil is good.

Find a small engine mechanic that has a Merc-O-Tronic coil & condenser tester. I used one for 30 years and it always told me if the coil or condenser was good or not.

my local dealers will let me look through their old stuff and see if i can find anything i can use. borrow a coil off of an old engine and see if that will get you some spark. they can say what they want but rust on the ends of the coil and the flywheel will keep the spark from being real hot. btdt.

You need to use a piece of 320 wet or dry to clean those points. Make sure the gap is .020"
when the points open. Take a flatblade screwdriver and touch those magnets to see if they
have magnetism. They should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Then see if you have fire from the plug wire. You need good magnetism in your magnets as this is what creates
your hot spark when the magnets pass by the coil.
If the magnets appear ok and there's no fire from the coil wire or is very weak you probably need a new armature "coil". Hal

Grab the plug wire and turn that flywheel across the magnets/coil. You should feel a tickle.
