International 46 baler trouble

Just got an International #46 baler. I DO NOT have a manual for it, so this maybe a stupid new owner problem. The tines to bring the hay into the baler are not spinning. Is there a shear bolt somewhere I could have missed? The chain is driving the gear down there..but no movement on the tines. Any ideas? Thanks!

you should be able to see the ends of the rods that the teeth are mounted to and locate the track that they run in. look good at that track. its probably worn into in some place and the ends of the rods are catching in the worn out spot and locking the @#$%^&^ thing up. if you need any help with learning new words while your working on it just ask. i'm sure there is a lot of us on here who can help.

I'm having the CaseIH service guy that I know come out and look at it tomorrow...we'll see what part is buggered up. I think with everyone's help here I've narrowed it down to either the track, or the bearing that rides on it.

the 440 balers had a slip clutch on them. yours may too. it can be adjusted. first look to see if there is some old twine that is wrapped around the tines and some other part of the baler and that will keep the reel from turning. also the track that the tine bars run in could be worn out and on end ot hte tine bars is locked up in that worn out spot. you can reapir the with a little welding

There is a sheer bolt and some have a clutch. not hard to fix or all that exspencive. But a pain to get to. Same basic design on most ih balers. If it has the big nut try tightening it a bit. Manuals show up on ebay. And yes that chain can break and is a major pain to repair in the field. A very good baler for a small farm.

I see the big castle nut on the end of the shaft coming out of the gear there...where would the clutch or shear bolt be located? I can't see them.

I"d suggest that before you get too far that you take the chain off and try turning the drum by hand. You can either try turning the chain cog or just grab the pick up tines, which is easier. That will tell you if something is hung up inside or if there is any binding as it turns. Just be sure you turn it in the same direction it should turn while running.

The clutch is behind the big nut and there is a big spring directly behind the nut that puts pressure on the clutch. If there is significant resistance then the clutch will slip.

I just got done puting my pickup back together so can probably tell you all the things not to do. I seemed to find most of them!

Well I spent some time today looking at it. The nut is on their TIGHT..I loosened it and tightened it again..no change. I have gotten a bit of play in the tines, but still, it gets to a certain point and it just stops dead. Do I have to take that whole drum with all the tines apart to get in there and see whats wrong?

You may have to take all those parts off, and it's no fun to do!

When the pickup stops dead, check each of the half circle rods that the sweep teeth are bolted to. It sounds like it's catching inside and one of the rods should be tight and won't rotate and the others should have some rotation (the sweep teeth can move up and down some). Then back off the rotation of the pick up cylinder just a little bit to take pressure off the stuck rod. Then, facing the pickup, see if you can slide that one rod to the left any. If it will slide left maybe a half inch and then the assembly will rotate ok then the problem might be a missing cotter pin on the left end. That is a quick check that might save you having to tear things apart.

I forgot to put the cotter pins back in on the left side when reassembling mine and spent a while talking to myself before I figured out the problem. The clearance tolerance on the right side is pretty small.
