JBMac,

I just got back from a farm show and looked at Fella mowers, including a cutaway display. The individual cutterheads are removed by taking the skid plate off to access 4 bolts holding it to the shaft housing and frame. The shaft goes through a octagan shaped hole in the cutterhead. The shaft runs in oil. Cavities in the cutterhead assembly are packed with styrofoam to deaden noise. Try to listen to the gear box to see if it is making noise, you have probably checked the oil level in the gear box. I saw the Fellas demonstrated the the field cutting hay and they ran quitely. There is a whine but not loud.

I still wonder about a loose belt. I have had loose belts make some wierd noises on other things. I also wonder if a bent knife could be making the noise.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'll check everything over and maybe try the rf thermometer. From what I can tell, they seem to be well made mowers, very heavy. Thanks again for the input.
