Well, I just got through planting 16 acres of a winter wheat, tritcale, oat and winter pea mixture for a food plot for wildlife and one thing I know for certain is that next time I will be sure that the settings on the drill are correct BEFORE I load the hopper!

When it was all said and done I went around the fields 3 1/2 times to be an application of 60lbs per acre of seed down. I had the gears set to maximum most of that time but was second guessing myself and ran them at a lower setting for a while before I actually counted the gears to make sure I was at the maximum setting.

Is the only other adjustment how far you have the openings in the seed bin open? To get it all done in one pass it looks like I would have to take the plate completely off? I would take pictures to show the how the gears are set but the drill is 100 miles away.

I'm pretty positive about the acres because that is what they are certified acres with USDA so I don't think it is a case where I'm overestimating the acres or anything.

The drill seemed to work well and was well worth the $250 I paid for it, but I have got to get this figured out before I plant again!

Can anyone help me sort this out and describe in laymans terms how to change the settings?

Thanks, Nathan

Dobber is right on. Get the JD Operstor Manual and follow it. No problems. Also the manual will tell you much more than basic seed rate settings. I got mine at the JD dealer. Tom

ejr there are no levers on a DR drill that resemble the levers on a fluted-feed drill suchas a B. The DR is set by changing gears. I 've never set a DR but was told when I worked for a JD dealer that they are more complicated to set but were much more accurate seed rate wise than a fluted feed drill. BTW DR stands for double-run. Tx Jim

Nathan & Jim there are is a small lever on each side of the double run feed cup, large side and small side. Nathan you don't open and run both at the same time unless you are just wanting to put out a outrageous amount of seed for some reason. You cover either the small or large side of cup with cover using the one needed to get your wanted rate on chart. You can get get extra seed cup covers to block some cups if you want to pull some disks openers off and plant row crops too. The double run drill actually makes for a very versatile planter. Small lever is adjustable on each side of feed cup on back side and controls the feed cup opening and closing to change feed rate so if you had something like real trashy oats with large kernels you might open the lever a bit more than called for in the chart to get what you want. You set the gears up like chart shows on the pineapple shaped gear set 1,2,3, or 4 and then can also move the other gear to fast or slow setting. You can get something like 50 or 60 settings for all kinds of small grains, large grains, beans, corn or more with that drill. It won't be as accurate with larger seeds though as a row crop planter. Once you learn how to really set it get more accurate than a flute feed drill.

Get a manual from JD or ebay so you can understand it. DR stands for double run and the cover is to switch from small side or large side of feed cup hence the name double run. You only use one side or the other depending on what rates you want or what seed planting. Operators manual will explain all that and much more. JD manuals 800-522-7448

Well, they want $30 for the manual so I'll look for one on ebay for a while and if I don't find one I'll break down and buy it before I plant next time.

Thanks for the info!

Their should be seed index levers on the back of each box that you slide for different seeding rates.

If you are not familiar with the drill, never load the entire seed supply before calibration. Load a portion, plant some, check the acre meter, and adjust accordingly.

The acre meter is not very accurate but I did attempt to set it at maximum and plant 2 acres and used less than 100lbs of seed. I didn't know what else to change to set it at a higher rate so I just filled it up and kept going at what I thought was the maxiumum setting.

After talking with someone about the settings they mentioned the cover over the opening of the hole in the hopper so I'm trying to get some insight as to whether that is the only other adjustment point or if there is other places to adjust it as well.

Thanks for the input.
