Was cutting some hay today and noticed that one of the disc was loose. Removed it and there was some gear oil sitting on top of the seal around the shaft. This is a kuhn gmd77hd (9 foot). Was wondering if I removed the snap ring will the upper bearing and seal come out or do I just have to split the cutter bar. I still have about 25 acres to finish.

I'm sure you don't have to split the cutterbar. Take the blade carrier off and you should see bolts to remove that allow you to lift out the gear assembly and replace bearings and seals. Be sure and keep the cutterhead in time when replacing. I will call a local kuhn dealer and ask this AM when he opens.

Just talked to Kuhn dealer. He said it comes apart like I said, just take bolts out and lift out. The bearings and seal are all replaceable individually.

We just had one apart here. I remember the bearings are all in a seperate housing(looks like a flat piece of steel). Does the bearing have a inner snap ring holding it down? I wouldnt think you would have to split it to replace a seal. I can ask one of our guys that worked on it today. The person that owned this one said they ran into tree limb. But they stripped out almost all the gears in it. Dont know if a tree would cause that!lol

Hey K.W.in Tx., any information would be handy. and would be curiow about how mcuh it cost to split an replace bearings. I know a fellow that drives a chisel into a new holland 462 and replaces the bearings and seals. Never seen it happen though. If I could make it another 25 acres it would make a good winter project.

Never had one apart...yet.
I think it will theoretically come out like you want to... but how do you pull the bearing out of the deck if it doesn't want to come out? I think that could be a problem.
I've got to take the bar apart on mine now to fix a crack in the bottom pan. I'm not looking forward to it.
