Army Worms mowing down my pasture. HELP!

Last time out at my property everything looked fine. Three days later I stop by the property to do a little herbicide spraying and see about 4 out of 12 acres of Bahia grass missing. I was thinking "aliens have abducted my hay field". Upon closer inspection it appears that army worms have taken over. They are about an inch long and there are 3 or 4 worms per square foot. Over a 4 acre area that means I'm the proud new owner of over half a million worms. These worms have grazed the grass down lower than my bushhog will mow! ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW THE SOLUTION? Also, if I don't do anything can I expect catostrophic damage or our we talking about just a lost hay crop this season. I'm in Central Florida so we are still in the growing season. The only other time I'm seen army worms out at the property is on occassion when they will strip about 1/3 of the leaves off a medium sized oak tree but I've never seen them graze on the Bahia.

Up here Army Worms used to be terrible every summer. Pretty much defoliate everything. So the DNR introduced some kind of big black fly to eat the worm larva, seemed to take care of the worms, but then the flies got to be unbearable. Not to be made fools of by the flies, the DNR then released some kind of beetle, looks like a Lady Bug, but bites people. "Lady Bugs" get into everything by the thousands including houses.Seems to have taken care of the flies. I think that the "Lady Bugs" are the worst pest of the three but am hoping to learn to live with them. Scared to death to think what the DNR might come up with to take care of the Lady Bugs, we may not survive. I miss the Army Worms.

The only good thing about army worms is that the army is very susceptable to Sevin, Malathion, Guthion, and no doubt a host of other insecticides. They die very easily. They wiped out a pasture on us several years ago and were then marching up the road into a field of oats. We sprayed them on the road and one boom width around the field with malathion. Killed them dead almost instantly. The road was black and slimy with them....
I think there's a 2 week withdrawl on pasture sprayed with Sevin, so that may be an option. If the field is ready to go, then mabey just make the hay. I know some guys just chopped their stuff right into their bunkers that year, worms and all. It was a race to get it before the worms...

You can spray them with something but if going to hay or graze yet check on grazing restrictions for the insecticide you use. If you or neighbors have small grains close like wheat or oats be more worried about that than the grass. I've already replanted some wheat armyworms and grass hoppers messed up.

You can spray sevin or malathion but you had better do it quick or they will eat the rest in a day or two. They will eat everything except whats in the shade. Your Bahia grass should come back but fescue won't.

Way back in about 1970 I had the same thing in a Fall oat field. Sprayed with Sevin. Problem completely solved. Tom

You need to call your local county farm agent and get him out there to see what's happening asap. Hal

i'd try liquid seven real quick and see if that helps. it kills the heck out of jap beatles and it might slow them down some until you can find something else. just wondered what an old cultipacker type roller would do to them by just driving over them and give them a good squashing. maybe pull it behind the spray rig at the same time. just guessing, but i'd act quick. our county has a local agricultural office that might have some pointers for you
