There is no hay in East and Middle TN worth the money to purchase. 5x5 bale are bring $95-120 depending on the type of hay. It cost $30-40 a round bale just to transport hay from wetter areas. The cheapest way out is to ration your hay and purchase corn gluten and feed.
Next year there will be no hay for sale either. All the hay producers that feed hay will not sell their excess. 40% of smaller livestock producers purchase most to 50% of their hay. You will see these smaller producers harvest their own hay or get out of the business. There will not be any more cheap round bales to purchase for a long time.

We are looking to haul hay down east of mephis maybe later this yr. I got a friend wiht 10,000 small squares of mixed hay in his barn to move. Also I know where there is some big squares to go to. I would be heading toward the Selmer area thats about a 645 mile trip from here in southern wis. If any wants to contact me I can see what I can find up here in southern wi. Hat is not as cheap as it used to be but the prices are better then down there. Has the farmers there considered other means of feeding cattle next yr? My buddy at Selmer has been doing alot of differnet ideas from up here. Things really seem to work out good for him.
Later

I have 187 small square bales still loaded on the wagons as they came out of the field. Had a bunch of calls from down your way but being 200 miles North of Cincinnati seems to be to far to come after it. Some fellow said he would be up Sunday to get it but never called back. Still has a coupla days I guess.

Some people are getting real angry about the price of hay, saying things like "highway robbery" & "taking advantage of people. When I had hay for sale, I was selling it for $3 & $4 a bale. I still owe people some hay and will sell it to them at the price I quoted, even though I could tell them "forget it" and sell it easily for double what I am selling it to them.
As far as I am concerned, this is a market economy and if you want to buy something, you better be ready to pay the going rate. The flatbed needs brakes, and will probably have to pay the mechanic a lot to fix it. Twine, fuel, equipment and supplies keeps going higher, I have to pass my expenses on. Wish I had a new baler and rake too.
About 6 weeks ago a lady was giving me a sob story about needing hay for a horse and only had $3 bucks to buy a bale. After we gave her a bale, dad asked her why she just didn't fence in the field beside the horse? She replied..."didn't have time, we are going to the fair tonight and the sternwheel festival next weekend!" Made me want to throw my gloves away!

I stopped by once Lou, but the cable was across the road. I did run into the guy with the ponytail you got it from, or so he claims. The fella I thought wanted it died, so thats out. Now I'm thinking maybe I ought to buy it. We'll see what happens. I still have your number.

I feel lucky, I am getting 26 large rounds from a freind for $5 a peice. Last falls hay, little brown on the out side, but under the outer 3" it is nice green and tender. They dont use the large rounds, were baled due to lack of storage room for small squares. Sure hope you folks scrambling for hay find some reasonable deals. I would feel guilty selling a round bale of hay for $95.

What size bales are the custom balers charging $22 , 4ft or 5ft wide and net or twine? Hay was scarce and high here last year but the excesssive rain and hay has caused the price to drop alot faster than I expected. A neighbor has several hundred rolls 4 X 51/2 for $20. Tx Jim

Yes Sir,

All depends on location. Guys around here are baling up Brome grass, which in any other year would be considered little more than a weed.

Selling the darned things for $100 a pop. :>)

Here in South Texas, normally 1500# Round Bales sell for $35, they sold for up to $150 each last year. This year they settled back down to $50 ish for fertilized coastal. It's now costing $22 per bale alone for contract baling.

We are bumping 50" of rain this year so far. Could get the hay cut, raked, and baaled without loosing it all. Maybe 3 weeks without rain since June. I know some folks are hurting bad for it.

I just made 51 of the 1500# bales off of 7 acres and will be saving it in case next year is bad.

Dadgum weather is crazy !!!

Well, if any of you are coming through the Chicago area on 80 with a trailer, give me a call. I'd be glad to drop 200-300 50 lb bales of timothy/alfalfa on for you. Hope you all get the rain your looking for!

I still got some straight alfalfa hay for sale, but it's going fast, and the freight to your area would probably make it not worth the effort.

I'm sold out. I was charging $2.50 for square bales and $20 for round. I still have people calling me.

I may be able to get one last cutting off of a couple of my fields, but will be needing that for my own livestock.

yep - I've sold out all my small square bales already, and many other folks here in Maryland, southern PA and Virginia are also sold out of hay. People are stocking up now for the long winter ahead since the drought out here has really hurt our hay production. I was lucky to be able to harvest a 2nd cutting of Orchard grass in mid-September and get an average of about 40 bales per acre.

There"s hay around up here in NW New Jersey, but much of it is steer/cow hay, not horse quality. I have some in the barn that was cut a little late but still has lots of green in it. Might have to put an ad in the Lancaster Farming paper . . . .

Boy the location is key to this deal. I have a guy I work with in central MO who has about 50 4x5 bales for $25 and cant move them (so far). And that is pretty much the going rate - maybe $30 for some. I sold all my big bales for $25 earlier in the year. Sure looks like there would be some money to be made hauling hay in there.

Still hasn't rained here at my place in KY. Did rain around me a little the other day. My fall hay is so sorry, that I am just going to turn the cows in on it in a couple weeks. Can't see waisting fuel or time to wad up what little is there. I have enough to get by on, but lots of folks here have been feeding for 2 months already and some are sellng off there cattle. Market has gone down too. Lots of these guys feeding will be out of hay by mid Jan, and forced to sell then. I think they would have been a lot better off to sell the cattle and their hay. At least somekind a profit could be turned that way. The life of the farmer. Ain't it fun?

I live 40 miles due south of Nashville. I need hay. Are you seriously considering bringing hay to Tennessee or are you just commiserating with us poor farmers?

I hear ya.

That's what I'm gonna do too. Buy a thousand bushel of cracked corn and try to get across the hump until better days.

Just don't wanna sell any mommas that we've worked so hard to start.

It's gotta rain again someday, doesn't it? :>(

Hang in there Allan, it will rain again. Probably way more than you want or need when it does come, if its like our country here. We were fortunate that we had more than enough moisture this year. Plenty of hay could be bought cheap, but the freight on a thousand miles plus makes it out of the question to send.
