WEED #5: I need help in identifying the weed pictured. I have Bahia grass and would like to know what herbicide will kill the weed without hurting the grass. I have used 2-4D with surfactant but it will not kill this weed.

A common name may be senna bean or rattle pod...

If it gets tall with a yellow flower then probably a Senna species. Check the label on Weedmaster or Grazon.

I would try some Dicamba of some sort on all 5 weeds. The new Status would be the safest to use since it is less volotile than some Dicamba products like Banvel, but try it on a small area before risking the whole field. Dicamba will kill some grasses, so be sure to watch the grass you want to save for any damage.

Crossbow will likely kill all five weeds and will not hurt bahia. Crossbow is a little higher in cost and I use for spot spraying.

I don"t know what the name of the weed you are trying to get rid of but I would suggest you take a sample to the County Extension office or the Weed Board and ID it. THEN try to figure out what touse on it. It"s pretty expensive to use "trial and error" logic to kill weeds. Figure out what weed you are trying to kill, then kill it!

If weeds are bit more woody plant you might ask around if Milestone is okay to use on bahia. It works on thistles and other broadleafs in pastures.

Clem,

I have delt with those weeds from time to time and they are hard to kill. Roundup will do it but like you know it rolls off the leaf even with a spreader sticker added. A fine mist seams to work better than a course spray and then the droplets will sit on the leaves until they are absorbed.

Although I dont know the name of the weed it grows mostly in wetter areas, grows rather fast, and if I remember correct it has a yellow flower after it gets about three feet.

You might also try MSMA. I havent tried that on those weeds but it will kill Bahia too. Bahia is a tough grass and will come back after you hit it with MSMA unless you spray it two or three times.

The yellow flower... in reply to SuperA-Tx, 10-06-2007 07:29:12
...I recall is on Weed #1. As you point out, when the weeds get to be tall and mature it will have yellow flowers.

sounds like a water quality issue then. if you are using 2 qts/acre of P+D and not getting a kill, then you better check the pH of your water. Chemicals work better the more acidic you go. Add 1-2 qts of LI 700 surfactant per 100 gl/water in the tank to lower pH.

Also, if you have hard water, the calcium can be binding to the chemical like it does especially with glyphosate.

Also note.... in reply to Tex Aggie, 10-06-2007 06:09:32
...I'm not using Grazon P&D. I'm using generic Amine 2-4D. I guess I need to try Grazon P&D as it is 2-4D plus Picloram. Maybe the Picloram makes the difference with these five weeds. Thoughts?

2-4D Only works on certain weeds in reply to Tex Aggie, 10-06-2007 06:09:32
The question I had was about identification of the 5 weeds that the 2-4D does not appears to kill and what chemical will work. The 2-4D is killing off the other 100 types of weeds around here just not these five. I don't think 2-4D is expected to kill 100% of all weeds of all types. So my question was concerning other Bahia safe selective herbicides to kill these 5 weeds. You do have a good point on the water quality. It is something I need to check into. Thanks.

Agree with SDF on the Grazon and Remedy. A tank mix of these two products is recommended here in NC. I have used it and IT WORKS when nothing else will. Not familiar with bahia grass, check to make sure these two are safe for bahia grass.

I'm surprized that 2,4,D didn't kill #5,4,& 3 What strength did you mix it? I have had some generic 2,4,D that didn't work well, so I usually use Grazon P+D as it almost always works. I put it down at around 4 pints to the acre. Your weeds # 1 & 2 need something like Remedy. It's expensive but it does the trick

Amount of 2-4D in reply to SDF, 10-05-2007 13:09:22
I used 2 quarts per acre. It will "burn" some of the leaves of the weed but it will not completely kill the weed. Pretty much all 5 weeds are not broadleaf weeds. Generally, all these weeds have very waxy leaves. I do use surfactant and it does help make it stick but not like your run of the mill broadleaf weeds.
