building side boards for trailer

I have a 18' utility trailer (two 3,500 lb axles) that has the factory stake pockets and I'd like to build side boards. I was thinking about side boards without gaps because I may want to haul small rock and manure at times. Just curious if any of you folks have built any and could tell me about how high, and did you use 2x4's for the stakes, what materials and if you used nails or carriage bolts. thanks,

they make some nice metal locks for corners on trailers, something similar to latch on stock trailers. i don't know if tractor supply has them or not. use pressure treated wood if you want them to last a long time. would use 1/4 inch carriage head bolts with the head to the inside. nothing sticks to them and put a washer that is the next size bigger under the heads and under the nuts works great too. that way the head has more to grip on and want pull through so ease. i've seen people just use a barn door hinge at the corners with the pin ground off and repalced with a bolt. i wouldn't put to much more than 18 inches on it either unless you just need it to be higher and if you did you couold just make the bottom solid and the skip a space or two in between other boards to make it tall enough to haul say hay on or move furniture with. that way it would be real heavy either. if you want to make them sharp. make the out of oak and put polyurathane on them. it will peal in a few years but looks great for a while.

Last one i helped with we used 2x4s and made it 18" high.... we use it for everything....we used 1/4" carrige bolts. Just remember to put the long boards on the inside of the stake boards so they last longer..
