I haven't kept up on who's actually making those things for Deere or NH lately, and I don't really recognize the model numbers. These are the 3-point mounted mowers without conditioners?
At one time Kuhn built those mowers outright for both Deere and NH. They practically painted over the Kuhn orange paint. Don't know what the case is today, but I'd suspect that they still have some agreement with Kuhn because I can't really see it paying them to develop a mower for that size market...
IN my opinion, if it's a Kuhn that's simply repainted, buy it wherever you get it cheapest or get the best service. But... if Deere or NH had aything to do with the design specs, go find yourself a Kuhn dealer and buy the bloody Kuhn, probably for less money. I've got a Deere discbine here with a Kuhn bar. IT uses other Kuhn parts too, mixed and matched with Deere components and some Deere design work. Look at it this way..... Kuhn built the mower to what they felt was the best design originally. Deere is working around patents and licence agreements to develop their mower, and the design was more of a compromise than anything. They don't float properly and I don't believe they have an adequate driveline (this is in the older mowers).... so if I was looking for another mower today I'd simply buy the Kuhn outright or even look at a Claas Disco.
Kuhn builds an excellent bar. I think if you keep oil in the bar and change it seasonally, you'll probably never see the inside of that bar. They use shear hubs on them now so if you hit something the hub will shear long before it damages a gear. I know there's a lot of those shaft drive bars out there, and people swer by them, and they swear they take less power... but I've got an older 465 NH (Kuhn GMD77HD) that's seena lot of hard rough service here and it hasn't wanted much other than a U-joints, jackshaft bearings and belts. Change the oil every year, keep blades, discs and shid shoes on it and go like hell. It's pounded a lot of rock too which is why it takes out some discs and a lot of blades. The bar has never been opened and it's as tight today as it was new.
I'm a big believer in that hypoid gear bar....

We had a CIH MDX91 (same as the NH) last year and sold it to buy a Kuhn FC4000G conditioner this year. Both mowers were good but the NH has a much higher cutterbar profile so you've really got to tip it down to mow down hay but if your not in alfalfa that probably won't be much of an issue. They are both good mowers and I wouldn't hesitate to buy either. A couple weeks ago I was talking to a guy who had priced both the Kuhn and Deere mower's from the same dealer and the Kuhn was almost $2,000 less than the Deere for the same exact mower. Kuhn builds the Deere disk mowers but I think Deere might change a couple very small things on them. If it's an issue for you the Deere/Kuhn mower's will work on a quick hitch while the NH mower will not.

I haven't used either of them but have payed attention to them at farm shows. JD has changed too fast recently to keep up with. Until recently, JD had Kuhn make their cutterbars according to JD design, according to dealer. These were gear bed cutterbars with gears running in oil. Don't know if the one you mention is in that category or not. Last year, I saw JD mowers in a dealers yard that were Kuhn mowers all the way, just had green paint on them. Kuhn mowers are well made and are probably the best of that type mower.
I looked more closely at the NH 617 since I was thinking of buying one. Also talked with a neighbor who has one and recommends it highly. The NH cutterbar has individual cutterhead assemblys with gears that run in oil. The oil in each cutterhead is checked and changed individually. To check, level the cutterbar with a carpenters level and check each the dipstick in each assembly. This from neighbor who has one.
The NH is a heavy machine and needs a fairly large tractor. However, the Kuhn is also heavy. The NH has the cutterbar assemblys driven by short shafts that telescope into each other. Hopefully, if the assembly breaks it will break only one section of the drive shaft and will require gears, etc, in just that one assembly. On the Kuhn and other gear bed mowers, if one gear breaks a tooth it may travel up and down the cutterbar and tear up all the gears.
I have worked on Kuhns for a dealer and talked to a NH owner. Short answer to your question is that either one should give great service assuming reasonable care given to it.

Oh, I wound up getting a Vermeer 9 fT. cut, due to a good deal from a nearby dealer. The Vermeer has other advantages too, but you asked about JD and NH.
But a new machine if you can and take care of it.
