Fire ants in control module

BIL's Claas baler quit wrapping. Dealer worked on it. Turns out fire ants are attacted to the electronics in the control module even with the baler not hooked up to the tractor battery. Baler was shed kept and not on tractor. Ants got into the module and shorted out a selenoid. A cousin had the fire ants get into the well pump switch and short it out. They also get into transformers and cause problems. Dealer said put grease around the control box on the baler to keep them out. A little poison sprayed on it might help also.

I had the same problem with my pressure switch box on my water well here in Texas. I talked to the owner of the well company. He said wrap a cat flea collar around the conduit feeding the switch a few times.

Never had a problem again! Just change it every few months.

Guys, Here in Central Texas we sometimes put a couple of "Moth Balls" in the bottom of an electrical box Ants do not like the smell, when the they vaporize out, then add more! Hope this helps.

I'm not sure why but insects are attracted to electricity. Even though the battery was disconnected, the capacitors will store electric for up to 30 years.

I have my pasture fenced in with electric fence. I'm using a 150 mile weed snapper and you would not believe the flies and other insects that line up in rows on this fence. Once in awhile one will get a little close to a ground and POW there's gone.

We had fire ants getting into the scale of a feeder and messing it all up. I bought some of those sticky fly strips and cut it to fit the inside of the control box around the electrical circuits and just stuck it to the control box. Sort of messy and they do dry up over time, but I had an army of ants stuck to the it when I reopened in the spring.
