changing sections from rivits to bolts

I have a new holland 450 mower and want some info on changeing it from rivits to bolts in the sections tryed to get a new sickle from dealer but all they would get is a rivited sickle.

thanks for the info guys i couldnt get any one out here to give me an answer all they wanted to do was sell me a complete sickle!!!!

You can use a 4" angle grinder to easily remove old rivets and take old sections out. This is handy when replacing a few at a time and you don't want to remove entire knife assembly. When using bolts you'll need higher clearance hold downs, easy and cheap to get. Hand torque nuts, as bolts break off if you tighten too much. Replace all dull ledgers at same time too, which are the small surface plates sitting in the stone guards. Hard to find just ledger plates, and usually I just replace the guard that already has a new ledger riveted on it. The ledger plate is the other half of the cutting action - imagine a scissor and you can see why it's important to have the sections sitting on the ledger plates or real close to them with small gaps. When you get it all done remember to first turn the sickle by hand and check for binding, and adjust as needed. After you run sickle a while check for exceesive heat on sections and guards, which indicates to much friction and adjust as needed. good luck

Snoopy,

I'm not familiar with a NH 450, but I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower that I use. Whenever I have to change a section, I replace the rivets with bolts. They are very easy to install, and I've never had one of them fail in the 4 or 5 years that I've been using them. I had to install new hold down clips since the nuts stick up above the sickle bar and would bind on the old hold down clips. I've heard the new clips referred to as "high-reach", "high-arch", and "high-profile" clips. I'm not sure what the right name is, but I got mine at TSC.
