1 foot height of grass on the field - can't bale brush hog?

I cut the first cutting late and now have the grass is approximatly at 1 foot height and my sickle bar mower clogs going through it. Must not be high enough as the first cutting cut very well. So I can't bale it.

I have heard that you are not supposed to leave the grass high in the field over winter as it can slow the growth in the spring. Wish I could remember where I heard that as I can't confirm. Based on this fact, if true, I was going to brush hog the field.

Any thoughts from any more experienced hay growers?

Thanks,

Jason

you should be able to cut your grass with a properly adjusted sickle bar mower. The 1-foot height is not an issue. I've cut and baled grass shorter than that with a Ford 515 sickle mower no problems. It may be clogging due to wet grass, and adjustment issues (e.g, dull sections and ledgers, too much gap between sections and ledgers, etc..). If you need hay then you should adjust the mower and get to it. If you don't need hay bush hog it real good. good luck.

Check to make sure that the end of the mower is slightly foward of the drive side. If it is hanging back at all the mower will dog out and plug easily. Should be an adjustment to bring it forward. If you are out of adjustment room then it might be time to start looking for a new mower. I'd check alignment, slippage, and binding first. ike

If your sickle mower has a belt, it might be slipping.

I know several people who have baled behind a bush hog.

My NH 451 would slice threw it like butter. even with dull sections it should still cut it. how do the rock guards look ? does it have ledger plates? are the hold downs set correctly? is the mower angle set right and lead set?

might need to check and see what is out of adjustment or worn.

Jason,

I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower that I use to mow hay. I can cut grass that is two inches high every bit as well as grass that is two feet high. I have literally used it to mow my lawn before. If I had grass that was one foot high, my mower would work perfectly in it.

Unless your mower is very different from those that I've used, you should be able to mow that hay with it and bale it right up. I think you need to give your mower some attention.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
