I finally found my cheap baler. A friend had a NH 169 kicking around that he said he couldn't get it to keep time. Other than that it's in very good condition. He sold it to me for $100. Couldn't complain about the price.

I'm going to pull the needles off the old NH 68 and replace the ones on the broken ones on the 169. As far as I can see the chain on the 169 is way to loose. It has a new brake on the knotters and everything else looks good. Hopefully it's just a chain jumping and an easy fix

Anyone have timing issues with a NH 169 know something that I may not be aware of?

After today I have 4 days of good weather, if the weather man has the slightest clue what he's talking about. I should be able to get the baler running tomorrow and finish up the bailing in the next three days.

Any input on this baler? Common problems?

I have one. Make u a guide on the long chain that drives the knotter. It flops and bad things happen, trust me. To much slack and the knotter will turn backwards. Mine is a lot better now. Timing is every thing.

When timing the baler, just make sure that the needle yoke rod is all the way back so the clutch pawl is up against the stop. Flywheel between the timing marks, yoke rod pulled all the way back, timing mark of the clutch gear and clutch disc together and a not to tight a chain. Then it should be happy baling! Be sure after you install the needles that you check the penetration and needle drive timing. That should all be in the manual.

I think the 269s are good balers. The Not sure if they have the longer hitch like the 273 or the shorter one like the 268. Most people don't like the short hitch. Be sure to note the adjustment on the needles before you take them off so you can get the new ones back in the same spot.

Only difference between the 268 and 269 was the longer hitch on the 269. Even with that, it was a bugger to use with a tractor set to cultivate wide rows. Not the greatest engineering marvel ever created. Fine if tractors were made about three feet wide, since the center of the flywheel was maybe 18 inches from the left side of the pickup.

Do you mean a 269? I've never heard of a 169.

You're right. 269 it is. I guess I got in a hurry and didn't pay much attention to detail
