New Holland 489 Info

I have a friend which has two NH 489 Hay Conditioners I'm looking to buy. One is mostly complete and is for parts only (Rusted out real bad).

The other was in the field working when he lost a seal in the wobble/gear box and burned it up. Mild rust but was highly functional before this occurred.

Rollers have small bare places but not many. They been like this for years and have not peeled anymore than they were to begin with.

He wants $750 for both. He stated he was sure the gear box was good on the parts donor.

I mainly do about 100 bales of Coastal each year so it's not a hire deal, just small time on my own field.

A few questions...
1) Does this sound like a fair deal?
2) Are parts still available?
3) If the wobble box is trash, what is a good figure to totally rebuild one?

Don't know if this'll help, but I replaced 2 sets of bearings in my 469's wobble box, and the parts were around $70, if I recall. Didn't get them from NH though, got them from a wholesale bearing house.

Check the wobble box flywheel for sideways movement and the knife arm that drives the sickle for vertical movement. If it"s full of oil and has no play in it, that sounds like a heck of a deal. A new wobble box from NH this year is going for $1200 on that machine. Also check the rolls of the good machine your putting the wobble box in and make sure they are also in good shape. Those rolls are another $1000 or so to replace. If you can swap wobble boxes and the rolls are good on the machine you are going to use, it"s a good deal. NH offers all the parts you would need for that machine.

I have a 489- good mower. To answer your questions, 1)CHEAP! If you don't buy it I would if it was close enough. :) 2)Yes, but NH is making parts for older machined pricey, probably to encourage buying new. 3)Sorry, no help on this one- something I've never had to have done.

I paid $850 a couple years ago at New Holland dealer for a new wobble box.(Parts only no labor)
