Discs on a disc harrow

I recently bought one of these little mounted disc harrows.

Having used it a bit I just noticed that two of the discs appear to be mounted the wrong way round (which is how it was delivered). The discs are concave (dished). On the front discs, i.e. the ones nearest the tractor, the discs are mounted concave-outward, which makes sense to me -- except the two outside discs which are concave-inward. These two discs have also been bent during their small amount of usage, and I think this is because they should be on the other way round (as in the photo, as far as I can tell).

The back row is all concave-inward, which also makes sense to me, bearing in mind that the front row is swept forward and the back row is swept backwards. My logic is that the discs should penetrate the ground edge-on in order to maximise the cutting effect and minimise bending.

Could someone confirm that this is correct? If so I'll try and remove the offending discs, straighten them out and put them back on the right way round.

Thanks for your replies. I've taken the offending discs off, straightened them out (well, tried to get them back to their original dished shape as best I can) and when the ground here gets softer I'll try them out again.

I'll definitely be weighting the implement down, see my earlier topic in Implement Alley.

I also take the point about lifting when turning. That could be part of the problem, as I was working in a small paddock, meaning frequent sharp turns.

I took a look at my disc, I agree, the front discs should be turned the opposite way as those in the photo. I own a cheap Lienbach model similar to yours. Bearing assembly is inadeqate for any kind of regular use. At least replacements are cheap, oh well.

if you add weight to the disk you may make the front end of your tractor to light and require weights for it too. if you can find some old tractor weights that are broken you might be able to use them for weights on the disk and it not cost to much. i welded some upright pipes on my disk and lay the weights down over those pipes. they stay on that way with a chain ran through them and around part of the disk.

I agree that those disks on the front need to be turned the other way.

I have found that turning with the disk in the ground can bend the corner disks too.

Most of the small 3 point disks I've tried or seen would work a lot better with about a half a ton of ballast. E.g. they are too light for the work you expect them to accomplish.

Three point fitting tool as well as disk on rubber tires need to be lifted when turning
