It seems that many fellows around here are starting to round bale their corn stalks this year (very litle straw this year). How many of you remember seeing NH small balers with a flail type attachment in front of the pickup in order to bale corn stalks? Was that an option solely from NH or was it an after-market offering??? It just didn't seem to take off around here

We use to bush hog, rake and square bale. At one time we used to run a Hesston 10 stack liner instead of the baler, awful dusty if the wind was at your back.

John Deere also had a similar attachment for the 24T. It was the No. 5 Flail Chopper, and went on in place of the normal pickup head. I've got one to go on my 24T, haven't tried it out yet.

Thanks Kerwin. I was sure I had seen advertisments for just such an attachment for NH. It would have been impossible, at that time, to even imagine the changes in agriculture that have taken place since then!!

This is how I experiment..... .

makes very good stuff - just like silage - only all dry pieces.....ready to feed....

this year I am going to make enough and try to cover it and keep it over winter....and see if i can maintain some better stuff over winter -

previously i have just dumped on the garden and let the rain and snow pile on top - just use it for mulh so far

I bale about 500-600 small squares of corn stalks every year. I just run the rake through after the combine, and then bale them. I have NH 268 baler and it seems to work fine.

I use the stalks for bedding. I also have about 40 head of goats who eat the stuff like its candy.

My dad had a row chopper that went in front of the baler, worked good but slow in light stalks

I was told by somebody that had done it that you could square bale corn stalks with a regular pickup as long the corn was picked and not combined, something about the cobs would damage the needles. Lee

Cobs can get stuck in the kneedle slots and bend the needles, but unlikely on a small baler. Have bent needles on my big square baler, but never on the small baler. Just blow the knotter off regular and you will be fine.
