I'm looking to replace my NH 479 mower conditioner by next year and have web shopped for a similiar machine. Question is what is the difference between 488, 489 and 492s? 488 looks like mine 489 and 492 look a bit different (can't see much in pics due to sheet metal)on the drive side and maybe in lift mechanism? There is difinitely a price difference so which one is best?

I have a 489 moco. It has a nice floating head, and a 9ft cut. The cutterbar and head float separate from the rolls makes it nice and light.

I thought a 492 was just an updated 489. The 492 was made 89-96. The 489 77-89.

The current 1065 looks alot like the 489 also.

The 488 I don't know about but looking at CNH parts it has the rolls head and cutter bar assembled all together and is a 9ft cut. Made 77-to current.

Also thinking of retiring my 479 (bought in 1972). Am going to an auction on Saturday that has a very well maintained 488. Hope to come home with it and will be able to keep a moco at each farm (10 miles apart). Do a search on this site re 488's and it appears that they are quite good machines. That 479 has been quite a machine and will probably be good for a few more years, but really good used machines are getting hard to find.

Jim, what neck of the ON woods are you in? I know what you mean about leaving mowers where they are: I mow my grandparents place 35km away, and another 8 acres 4km from that, and next year there will be another 50 acres that's 6km away from our own farm. I don't think rakes, balers, and mowers weren't designed to be towed that far. My uncle was doing it for 18 years, and now it's my turn.
By the way, I'm happy with our 489 after 3 years.

Jay

Hi Jay - I'm near Jarvis, which is south of Hamilton, near Lake Erie (Nanticoke G.S.).We've run NH equipment for many years and have been especially pleased with our 479, but it is getting older(I'm not though?)and this 488 is coming up for auction on Sat. Where are you located ??
