Old Baler Needed

The old NH 68 finally baled it's last bale. We had it limping along all year and it decided it wasn't going to do another field.

I just put a small fortune into getting my tractor back up and going and don't exactly have thousands to dump into another baler. I've got about 8 fields left to do. Anyone out there have a cheap beater that will get me through the season? Doesn't have to be anything special, just something I can make limp through the rest of the year. Don't mind doing a little work to get it going.

I live in Upstate NY, near Oneonta.

Have you tried looking in the Pennysaver or Want Ad Digest?

What's so wrong with the old 68?

My experience has been that as long as the transmission is good, and the bale chamber isn't completely rusted through, most everything else can be resurrected. Best place for parts is the boneyard.

I bought this at an auction a few years back. It was obviouse that it had set out in the brush and weather for several years. With a little oil, grease and some wire brushing, I was able to get it back up and running again.

The problem was the barrel was rusted real bad.I would get a crack now and then and would just run it back to the shop and fishplate it...then back to work. I knew it was getting bad, but was hoping to atleast get through the season.

Last week I was bailing along and herd a H*!! of a racket, I looked behind me in time to see the barrel trying to come off the end of the baler. It seems that when the packer arm packed the last bale, the barrel decided to cut loose and go with it.

The barrel goind bad is just part of a list of many parts that need to be replaced. The rear frame is just about done for and there's an unpleasent sound coming from the transmission that has been getting louder with each use.

Over all the baler was well worth the $100 spent on it about 3 or 4 years ago. Just needs to go to that final resting home.
