I'm stuck trying to remove the serrated-edge blade in my Massey Ferguson sickle mower. There are two bolts where it is attached to the cam but I can't get at the nuts with a wrench because of the casing. Even when the blade is at the end of its outward cycle the nuts are still inaccessible. Also can the serrated blade be sharpened?

What model MF mower are you working on? If it is an M41 or an M31 Only one bolt attaches the the entire sickle to the crank arm. Remove that bolt, with the cutter bar on the ground, then slide the entire bar out under the mower drive box.

As for sharpening sections. I've been told you can sharpen smooth sections or under serrated sections but not top serrated sections. I'm no expert. Go lightly with an angle grinder, it cuts fast and deep.

There are some good discussions in the archives of this web site, so you should pull up some old inputs. Thats a fast amd easy place to go when you need info or ideas.

You've got it. Just need to put the bolt back in a couple threads and tap it a few times. That will loosen the compression fit and force the blade attachment out of the arm. Once it is loose you will see how it goes together.

The model no. has faded but I think it's M41, Made in Canada. My tractor is a MF 200. I unscrewed the bolt facing upwards on the attachment assembly but it seemed more like a lubricating channel because it didn't release the bar which is about four inches below from the assembly. Right at the bar are two other bolts but they are the ones I can't get with my wrench. Maybe I should go at it with a pry bar now that I have the upper bolt undone?

Wow,it actually worked! I tapped on the bolt head and sure enough the attachment tongue started sliding out of the assembly and I could slide the sickle bar out under the mower. What an unusual attachment arrangement. On another note. How do I know if I have added enough/too much hydraulic fluid. The mower's not lifting very well. Also are there long-term effects of running the tractor with one of the cylinders disconnected. It was backfiring a lot?

I would use a disc sander to sharpen the knives.
