Got my hay stored and covered for winter. In the past, I tried several methods using wood paletts and tarps of different sizes. What a pain. Snow, ice, wind all work against you every time you remove a bale. I got my present method from a gentleman in Ontario right here on this site. Just wanted to pass it on and to tell him thanks again. It is painless and works great. My horses love it too.
I bought some cheap RR ties. Laid them in a double row about 50 feet long-looks like a RR track. I use the tractor to set the bales on the ties. I found that keeping the ties about 20 inches apart keeps my bales off the ground but is not so narrow so that the bales roll off. I set them end to end like you would in the pasture. When I'm done I have a 50 foot long line of hay bales. I buy 6 mil black plastic from the local lumber store. It's 10X100. I put he plastic on top of the bles and cut it off so that it drapes over the ends. To secure it over the bales I cut some 5 inch round hickory logs into 15 inch long pieces. I link two logs together with 10 feet of 3/8ths plastic rope. I just throw one of the logs over the bales and black plastic and let the weight of the logs hold the rope over the bales. My plastic holds even in the strongest wind. I have 7 ropes for every 50 feet of hay bales.
I've got a few pictures I will be glad to e-mail to anyone who is interested.

Chris. There is nothing holding the plastic down except the rope over the top with the log weights supplying the down pressure. E-mail me thru this site and I will send the pics to you
