i have a vermeer 450i baler that i bought used , the bigest problem i have is i cant get it to bale when hay is dry. no problem when hay is damp o has a dew on it. i went thru the manual and tried to set everthing acording to spects. the belts look prety slick and worn i wonder if this might be a problem. also i am new at baleing hay and to the baler operation.i would appreciate any thoughts and info anyone might have

thanks johnking

It will help greatly if you find a less dense area in the windrow and start there, feed a little in at a time until you see the bal start to form, then go after it....

I'm not familiar with the model your model of vermeer. I have a 605H, Mine has flaps on the feed roller. If they are worn it acts the same way as you described. Also make sure all of your pickup teeth are in good condition.

I believe you have a Vermeer 504I baler. The belts on that Vermeer baler have nothing to do with feeding the hay or turning the bale inside the bale chamber. The drum roller does the turning of the bale. Here's what you need to do. Get a half a bale in the bale chamber and clean out all the chaff in-between the coils of the belt tension springs. Then finish out your bale and tie it. That will reset your start tension for your baler.

When hay is very dry you need to start the bale at half throttle and still be moving around 4 MPH ground speed. What is likely happening is you are easing into the windrow and the teeth are pulverizing the hay before the baler can make a core and start the bale. You might check the distance between the top of the teeth and the starter roller. That measurement should be 3-3.5". The closer to 3" the better you will start a bale.

It sounds to me like the hay is too dry. If it it that dry, you have to feed the hay in realy fast to keep the leaves from shattering and falling back out of the baler.

Larger windrows will make better bales
