I need to distribute # 57 gravel along 1.2 miles of roadside. The road is paved but the shoulders drop off up to 4-5 feet some places. What does anyone think about trying a side chute or dump gravity-fed Killbros type grain wagon. I would load it up and tow it along slowly, dropping a line of gravel as I go? Wouldn"t this work well?

Fella I know ordered 10 yards of washed gravel "In a Cement Truck". They positioned the chute off to the side, spun the drum in reverse, and very nicely spread out the gravel in ~10 minutes - Almost no hand spreading required.

He had to special order it, but the Gravel Pit did it for him.

Otherwise, I usually see it spread with a belly-dump trailer and then bladed over the edge with a road grader.

First off, is this a private drive, or public road? If public, it is the county or states problem to fix. Now, to spread gravel with a gravity wagon, it may work if the gravel is dry, but if it is wet or damp, it wont feed well at all. ] Also, do not load the wagon up over half full, as gravel weighs a lot more than grain. Have a rear blade? you might need it.

They were using a gravity wagon for that along I40 East of Little Rock a few years back. Only time I have seen it done with stone. The golf course by us uses a gravity wagon to put down mulch along strings of trees and bushes.

Not if you load it up..... Gravel weighs considerably more than corn or beans. Gonna bust something.

Gravel probably won't slide out near as well as grains either, so plan on pulling it out with a hoe or something. Or at least, plan for worse results than just drive along & all the work will happen automatically.....
