drum mower questions

I"ve been looking at alternatives to my broken 488 NH Haybine. I have an Oliver 82 mower, and I"m debating buying a crusher, or going to a disc or drum mower. I"m only doing a few acres of hay now, so I"m considering one of those C&C drum mowers from Tennesee. I"m open to suggestions.

Thanks, guys, that echoes what I"ve heard locally. I have a TO-20, an Allis 180, a 1550 Oliver and a Ford 8000, so If it doesn"t work on one, it ought to work on another. I don"t have to transport it, so I hope I can use it on the Fergie.

I bought one from C&C back in the spring. I had an old disc mower I pieced together and it exploded. So I bought one of these drum mowers the 165. It is awesome. It will basically mow just about anything you want to. Wet or thick does not matter it just cuts it. Now not to discourage you but so you know up front. This mower doesnt use a hydraulic cylinder for transport it just releases and goes straight out behind the tractor. When it is straight behind the tractor it is heavy because it is so long hanging off of your hitch. Now thats not a problem but can make the front end of small tractors very light. Other than that one problem it may be the best value in hay mowing.

Hi Karl - I purchased a used drum mower over a month ago and cut about 10 acres of hay with it. Other than the fact that it mows the grass so short I worried it would die(it didn't), I really liked it. Once you use a drum or disc mower you will NEVER want to go back to a sickle bar mower. The hay I cut was very tall, and very wet from an overnight rain. I never stopped once for a clog. I just mowed as fast as I could stay on the tractor seat and watched the grass lay over like a hot knife through butter. Only problem is you have to ted it out after to help condition it. Good luck.

I guess a side delivery rake wouldn't accomplish the same job as the tedder? I've never been around one of those.

If ya set the rake so you only take off half of the windrow you might do ok
