If I was building one, I would make one of the self unloading trailers that consist of two long tubes paralel with some sort of self unloading latch on a double axle with brakes and a goose neck...of course, I doubt I could build one as cheap as buy one.

15 years ago I built a 9'x 20' hayrack on an 8 ton running gear. It will haul 8 5'x6' round bales or 200 square bales. I've hauled thousands of round bales and never lost one. The stringers are 3 2x6's nailed together with valley tin between them for added strength, the floor is 9' treated 2x6's nailed on crossways with pole barn nails. The original stringers are starting to rot and will be replaced with treated 2x10's. You have to load and unload with an FEL but it's easy to hook and unhook. Lee

We have a 6 bale trailer that rides on an old semi trailer axle which works great and with a loader we can stack two more bales on top for a total of 8. For a frame it has a single pipe down the middle that's 13" in diameter if I remember right and then 5" pipe crossways about every 3' for the bales to sit on that are bent in the middle so they are about 4" higher on the ends to keep the bales from falling off. It was built by a welding shop somewhere and there are a couple dozen more just like it in our area and I've never heard of anybody breaking one. Our's carries four bales in front of the axle and two behind but most of the newer one's have a set of cradles above the axle so they carry 8 bales.

a lot of guys in tenn use a flat bed trailer to haul equipment on to haul hay. they butt two bales from each side and then put a bale on the top right in between 4 bales, 2 on each side. they don't even tie them off. i think that is very dangerous, not to you maybe but to passing motorist. i gave a guy some hay in front of my house and he picked it up today. he used a factor made trailer with on 6 arms sticking out to each side and tilled up to about a 15 degree angle. each arm was welded to a 6 inch pipe running the length of the trailer and into a goose neck hitch. he could add another two bales to that arrangment by puttingg them on top. i use to deliver a lot of round bals where people didn't have equipment to unload with. i just used a flat bed trailer and tied a rope to one side of the trailer and threw it across to the other side and under a rail that was only a couple of inches high on each side. i set the round bale down long ways on the trailer and on the rope. i used the rope to tie the bales down with and then when i got where i was to unload i untied the bales from one side of the rail and ran the rope out from under the railing, threw it back acroos the bales and tied any vehicle that was close to the rope and it would simply roll the bale off. this made the bale end up on the top instead of the bottom, but this guy was feeding it up as quick as i could deliver it to him any way.

I eventually solved my bale hauling problem by coming up with 2 FELs, one to load in the field and one to unload, and a part interest in a gooseneck trailer. Before that I used a 16 foot equipment trailer which would haul four 4 by 5 bales or three 5 by 5s, which I unloaded with some trouble with a 3 point hitch spear. I gave thought to making a trailer low enough to load and unload with 3 ph. I was going to use an old truck frame and mount axle stubs offset so that I could load a bale in front of the wheel on the opposite side, then go to the other side and do the same thing. One wheel would be one bale width in front of the other. Trailer would be only wide enough for one bale. Some orchards use this type of trailer(used to anyway) and load boxes roughly 5 feet square on the trailer with fork lifts. This would be a 2 wheel trailer and I think I figured it would haul 4 or 5 bales. Would have to check the load rating of the tires.
I don't know anything about making a gooseneck trailer, so no suggestions there.

You didn't say what size bales you were going to haul

A neighbor made a trailer to haul 4 by 5 bales side by side and dump them by releasing a catch. He said everyone else hauled wide loads so he could too. It hauled 6 or eight bales, I think.

Just making suggestions to help your thinking.
