9'-12' discbines; any reccomendations?

I'm looking to move up to a discbine from my current NH 488. I have an Oliver 1855 (roughly 90 HP; 1,000 PTO) or a beater 1650 (60 HP; 500/1000 PTO), but I'd really like to use the 1855. Trying to determine what my best options are. I'm looking to pick something up in the $6,000 range on auction. I have used a couple Gehl 2412's and really liked them, and they seem to go for about what I'm looking to spend. Not sure if my 1855 would be up to the task of pulling a 12 ft. discbine, or if I have better options. Any suggestions?

Weve a 12 hydra-swing Hesston 540 pto Moco and 1000 pto Roco used behind 90 hp class 1859 Olivers. These hp and weight of tractor to mower combinations work well on the level and hilly country we hay.

I have a 1855 tuned up to 135 hp & used to run with a Kuhn fc300. When I do marsh hay this was about all the tractor wanted to handle in 4th over. If you have thin hay you can always shift up. I use a Kuhn 283 now & wouldn't want a larger machine on the tractor.

We got a new 13' Kuhn FC4000G center pivot machine this year that we've been pulling with a strong running 1066 and I wouldn't want any less tractor on it, not only hp but weight wise as well. In my opinion the Kuhn machines are the cream of the crop but the New Idea side pull machines are supposed to be pretty good too.

NI 5209 is a nice 9 foot 3 inch machine. Used mine since 1990 on a 4430 , son now uses it on his 3020 or 4020. Still a dealer network, whereas Gehl is out of livestock equipment, except for skidloaders.

the widder the machine the harder it is to get it to cut all the grass on uneven land. it will ride on high spots and miss a grass down in low spots.

Got a neighbor/2nd cousin who has a roughly 10 ft. Krone discbine. He pulls it with a Massey 399 if I'm not mistaken, and I think it's right around 90-100 HP. I think I'd stick with around a 10' unit too, just so you can actually get up to speed, instead of just going at the same speed allowed by a sickle bar machine.

We've got an 1855 as well, but it dyno'd out at 105 at the dealership 2 years ago when it was getting a new clutch. We've got a 14' hydro-swing moco we pull behind either that one or our Masey 285. Depends on the weather and what I feel like driving.

Not sure if this helps at all

I'm running a 14 foot off of a 130hp Massey and in all honesty I wouldn't want to go with a lower HP tractor around here pulling a 14 footer. But then again I'm dealing with alot of hills and some are rather steep. On some of the hills here I can hear that turbo working some.

I personally would recommend going with a 10ft for the hp you're using. If a neighboring farm has a 12 ft kicking around and would let you borrow it for a cutting, that would be a good way to see how your tractor will do.

A Kuhn FC300 should be in that range at 9'9". I think that would be enough if you've got some hills or wet ground. I don't think I'd want to try that mower with less than 70 hp.
There's often a point with a disc mower where you can get by, but if you want to hop along with them you need power in front of them, particulairly in heavy crop. The FC300 would be a nice match in front of your big tractor...
