We had one when I was a kid. Probably modified from a horse drawn sulky type unit. When I knew it, my dad clamped it on the rear gangs of the tractor-cultivator. Used the front gangs conventionally, rear gangs covered wheel tracks, then weeder followed along behind, knocking out little weedlets in the rows. Used primarily on first cultivation of corn.

I actually have one. They were designed to weed small grains, oats, wheat, barley etc. The tines are much too small to do anything heavier than that. I think you"ll find they were much more popular in Britain than over here.

I will further explain the first most important use of the WEEDER or ROTARY HOE or the SPIKE TOOTH HARROW which all three are ideal for the first cultivation when you growing seeds which are planted deeper then the many weed seeds which sprout much sooner.So as soon as the corn in up a inch or two,you break the soil loose and the tiny weeds die quickly.This is excellant for dry land(smooth)farming.We used this method with a two section spike tooth set at 45 degrees.This does away with the weeds for that season.All three methods are done at high speed. This is also known as a rod weeder. Uncle had one back in the day. He called it a pipper. He used it in corn for the first cultivation. It performed similarly to a rotary hoe. The faster you went the better it performed.
