I purchased a Massey #12 square baler. The plunger is stuck. It appears a foriegn piece of metal (unknown source) has lodged itself under the plunger. I have tried all I can to dislodge. I think I need to cut the corner of the plunger off to unstick it it. I can weld it back without a problem. I can weld very well.
Is this too drastic a measure or am I heading the right direction? I have tried a puller and sledge...its stuck good.

That appears ta be the remains of the plunger runner, have you slackened off all the adjusting bolts, top, bottom and side ? I would try welding that piece to the bottom of the chamber, remove the plunger arm and try to drive it forward. Good luck. JJ.

Thanks. Thats what I was afraid of. I will give that a shot. I have backed off the bolts on the outside. Didn"t notice any on the inside, but will look again. I appreciate ya"ll help. I am a total newbie to the hay area. Tried to save a few bucks buying a used baler at auction and it hasn"t worked out to well so far...

That stuff happens... I think it's something off the plunger or the runner, but I'm not familiar with that baler.
Don't fret the little things like that. Fix it and go on. You could have bought the thing from a dealer, paid a lot more, and still had this happen.
This is what old gear is all about...

Can't see any hay dogs or stops in that area. Here is a photo of what I am seeing:

My New Holland has a safety bar that when the knotter is out of time stops the plunger from shearing off the needles. I would think that most balers would have this but sure do not know for sure. I had a spring on the knotter break last year and it saved my needles. Took some fiddling around before I see what stopped the plunger.

Thats interesting. I will look at that angle, although I do not see anything that will impede the movement (other than what is in the picture I posted)

Can you disconnect the plunger and haul it out? I've unhooked them, tied the plunger to an immovable object and drove away... You'll want to get a good look at everything and inspect the plunger well. It may be time for new plunger bearings anyway.
Otherwise, I wouldn't be afraid to torch it out. Just keep lots of water on hand in case you light her up...

The plunger is far back in its stroke. Its only about 2 inches forward from the rear. There is DEFINATELY a piece of metal under the track on the right side (by the hay opening). It is a small irreagular shaped hunk of metal. There is a small portion of the metal sticking out from under the rail. I can't get a pair of pliers on it. This is a metal track system. I am wondering if it was a shim or part of the guide track that went bad and hung up. Once I get it out, is this a dealer part or do I need to make friends at the local machine shop ?

It might be the shims have rusted and swelled up.Ours did the same thing. Unhook the plunger, yank it out, then take out the rails.Clean out the rusted shims, and you shoud be back in business.

Don't light the cutting torch just yet. I think that soldan fellow might be on to something.

Is it a haydog that has dropped down? I am not much of a baler guy but I was looking under our MF10 and there's two of them things under there.

Haydogs should be beyond the plunger's stroke range.
