When I was looking for a spreader last year. I figured I could pick one up for a few hundred and be good to go. Every spreader I looked at the was in working order was $2000 +

I ended up buying an old John Deere spreader that was litterly falling apart for $400. The wooden floor was gone, the sides were rotted so bad that you couldn't even haul firewood in it without losing your load withing 20 feet.

I put a new floor and wooden sides on. This spreader sort of runs. The biggest issue I have is the dogs that ratchet the bed chain back are shot. If I get a real heavy load in there, it will set there for a good 15 minutes or so before it moves back 1 inch. It makes for a long day. The spreader is so old that parts are impossible to get and usually you have to get a piece of metal and make your own.

I would of loved to come across the spreader you're talking about for only a couple to $400. Then I would of enjoyed watching my old spreader being crushed.

Many want loose chains - certainly not tight anyhow. Almost all spreaders have adjusting sliders up front on the idler sprockets. A long draw-bolt on each side. One can take a link out, but likely it was 'normal'.

I know on auctions, I let a lot of good deals go for the very same reasons. :)

You catch a good one once in a while too. I bought a set of pie wheel weights for my Ford a few years back, with the discs & special nuts. All for $12.50. Folks here tell me it's worth $400-600.
