Does Frost hurt hay.

So I live in middle Tn and you can see my question. Can hay be baled and fed to horses once its been frosted on. I dont mean that it was baled before the frost. I mean that it was frosted on then cut and baled later. I think that is clear as mud. I hope

And if it is baled incorrectly they won't eat it? How do you bale it incorrectly? Cure it or fail to cure it so it molds I can see but baled incorrectly. Just struck me as funny.

It sure can.

I usually wait until after the first frost to get my last cutting of the year in. Usually after a good frost or two the grass stops growing and it's a perfect time to get that last cutting in. My horses are all still alive and well.

Like in the other reply, just make sure it's good and dry.

Also wanted to add something I learned the hard way.

When you buy twine for this baler buy the 9000ft rolls. It's a little thicker than the other twine and it's the only one that will knot for you. I tried the longer rolls of the thinner stuff and it tied maybe 1 out of 10 bales. These older balers don't work so well on thin twine.

Briar creek, I think you have it mixed up, 7200 is thicker then 9000.
correctly baled hay- meaning it was baled at the proper moisture content as to not dust, mold or burn your barn down.

hay can be baled after its been hit by frost. just be sure it is dry when you bale it. the only problem is at this time of year, drying time is very linmited because of dew and cooler temps, the horses won"t mind as long as its baled correctly.

Be careful if you have Johnsongrass in your field. Once the frost hits it, it'll turn coppery colored, and then it's toxic.
