I've got a JD 510 and the only time it plugs is if I don't see a wrist-sized (or bigger) tree limb in the windrow. Also if the hay is too green it wraps around the rollers (like most other balers), other then that it works just fine.

They are tough balers to opperate.Conditions need to be PERFECT at all times or you will be pulling alot of stuff from the front and will likely have to use a pipe wrench on the shaft drive to free it up.pd

I bought a new one in the early 80s, traded it off a year latter for a 1560 Massey which is the same as a 605F Vermeer, I thought I had died and went to heaven. Those JD 510 and 410 just would not bale fescue in this part of the country, trust me you don't want a closed throat baler of any color.

Baled thousands of rolls of nothing but fescue with no problems.

I have an old 510 and it is a good baler. Don't roll as tight as some of the newer ones, but works good. They were made in the late 70's and maybe very early 80,s

I have a 510 and get along fine. I suppose I have only baled maybe 30 bales with it this year but I have also baled 100 in a day before without any trouble. Mostly use it when some hay I wanted to put in squares gets rained on or I just dont have time. I bought a pretty nice 510 cheap and just put a few parts on it every year and try to keep it up in good shape. It is easier and cheaper to have this old baler around than it is to wait and pay for the custom balers. That being said I wouldnt buy one that needed alot of work and go into the baling business but it works out good for me. bill

I've never used one, but from comments on here and from talking with people locally, it has many problems. Hard to start bales unless hay is at right stage, parts expensive, and it is old. It seems the different manufacturers didn't start making really good round balers until the late 1980s. Hope he didn't pay much for it. You could do a search on here for 510 baler threads.
