Guys!, Ya'll talk like money is NO Object here. Oats here in Central Texas are about $15.50/ 100lbs. Last year they nrann about $11.00/100lbs. Takes about 120 to 130lbs / acre, if you intend to graze. The old timers around here are Not doing it. It is one thing to plant 5 or 10 or even 15 acres it is totally different when one is planting 100 to 600 acres. H3ll yes most of the guys I know plant bin run, just figure a heavier rate. it is BS to plant Certified every year, Get certified every 3 to 5 yrs, or when you want a new variety in your mix of things. Just my opinion. Wheat is the same thing, My relatives keep 5 semi loads of wheat (bin run) every year plant near 2000 acres Irrigated & Dryland. Just telling you how the bigger operators do it.
Later,
John A.

Here in the midwest, they say you can plant any old bin run outs to make hay with. You arent looking for grain yield, so its all going to be about the same. Dont waste money. Get the cheapest oats you can get and dump them in the ground. Oats are crazy. They grow like mad. I literally planted feed oats from the feed store this year and they're growing just fine.

Planting "feed" oats is like rolling the dice in Vegas, somtimes you may be OK and the next time they will completely die out with the slightest freeze. All depends on the variety of the oats. Thats why if you want to stay in this business better plant "seed" oats of known varitey. BTDT years and years ago. Tom

I used feed oats one year and had great results; the next year the feed oats introduced a lot of cheat grass.

You need to call Turner Seed Company in Brekenridge. They grwo and sell seeds of all types. Will advise you on varieties and will beat everyone else on the price. Real professionals and nice people. Ask for Jay. I can't find their number right now, but I am sure it will be no problem for you. Tom

Your more than welcome. They are honest people and can fix you up with varieties good for grazing, good for harvest, etc. They even have blends of oats-wheat-triticale(sp??)-barley and things like that. Thier prices always seem to be lower than the local feed stores around here (Weatherford) so I drive out about once per year. Get on their mailing list and they send you the total seed list couple times per year. Tom Fletcher

Tom
Which feed store have you checked in Weatherford? All 4 of the major ones seem to have comparable prices and not worth the long drive elsewhere.

About 10 miles South of Weatherford, near a little wide spot in the road called Tin Top. I like that country you are in. Drive through there coming and going to my BIL ranch up in Buffalo Springs, up North of Jacksbora. Tom

You should call your local county farm extension agent and see what he recommends for your area. I would have a soil analysis done too. Hal
