Shopping for a 15 Batwing Rotary mower to mow pastures with some brush. I have a 70HP tractor with a 540 PTO and a 155HP tractor with 1000 PTO. I am looking for recommendations for mower type (Rhino FR15 or equivalent) and PTO speed.

Bought an MW that was setup for 1000 rpm, but you could easily change by just switching the input and output gears in the gear boxes. That was the original plan so I could run it on a lower horsepower tractor (85 hp). It didn't take long to reconsider, 1000 rpm and a higher hp tractor is the only way to go.

If the 70 has a 1000 shaft, go 1000, ALL THE WAY.
Otherwise, if the big tractor has 540 then I'd go 540. I hate using a big tractor to do a small tractor's job...

Thanks to all that responded. Finding a 1000 RPM mower this time of year is a chore. Everything is 540 which made me ask the question. I did find a used Rhino SR20 with a 1000 RPM divider - 7 on a scale of one to 10 for $7500.00. I have a fear of buying used mowers; never know what you are really getting.

While power is more efficiently xfered on the 1000 rpm shaft.. since you are at the low end of the power range.. I imagine a 540 would be fine.

I mow with a jd 1517 batwing.. works just fine on my NH 7610s with ~90pto hp.

My ford 5000 will spin the mower up fine.. but at 67 pto hp.. it'd be a low gear mower.. so I keep a 10'er on it and can drive at a comfortable speed.

Any chance your 70hp machine has a replaceable pto stub? My fords do.. can swap to 1000 rpm pto buy buying the stub.. etc..

If so.. then get the 1000 rpm unit by all means.. etc.

Heck.. that 155 should run a 20' mower fine... unless you are looking for one for both to pull..

Too many twisted(up and in two) PTO shafts is why manufacturers started putting 1000 RPM PTOs on thactors. 1000 RPMs cut the torque in half over the old 540 shafts.
