OK, still looking for the right Round Baler. Found a NH 644 for sale. What can you guys tell me about these, I know that bale size is appx 4x5, and they are the 2nd? gen of NH belt balers. Are these considered open throat? solid core baler? Reliable? Anything in particular to look for?

We bought a 644 about 4 years ago, second owners, and it is a very good machine. I have put 2000+ rolls through it and have had to do nothing to it but grease and oil it. Have had it at the dealership once for a winter checkup and the only thing they did was tighten one chain on the pickup and relace one of the belts. Ours is Auto-wrap, which is very low maitenance and simple to operate. Bale size,density and core density are easily adjusted, as well as amount of twine that you want applied to the bale. They are open throat balers. Some have the Bale Command monitoring system instead of auto-wrap - never used one with this system but im sure it can be handy and allows you to make all of the bale size, twine settings, etc. changes from the tractor seat. I really enjoy baling hay with ours, they are just about impossible to plug up, and I have been able to make up to 30 bales an hour with it. Also, you can get by with running them on a tractor as small as 60 HP.

Seem to be really good machines overall.

i have used my neighbor's 644 for several years. it is a very nice baler. easy to start bales, the guides show if one side of the bales is getting slack, automatic tie. just be sure the bell or buzzer that announces the start of tieing is working good.

644's are at least the 2nd generation of nh belt balers.Assuming that the 640's were the first.They are hard core,although the core can be adjusted by the spring tension.The tighter the spring,the tighter the core.Then you also have the pressure control on the cylinder.So you can have a hard or soft core bale with high or low density.As far as I know they are reliable,look fairly easy to work on and maintain.
