How do sharpen the auger fro a posthole digger?

My auger will not dig into the ground anymore. It used to work great. Can anyone give me some tips on what the cutting teeth should look like or what kind of angle needs to be cut on the teeth? The only way I can get it to burrow down is to take an 8'long post as a lever and sit on the end of it. It worked great before. It does have removable cutting edges but I don't know if they can be replaced. It's probably a 40 to 50 year old Ford digger that looks like a Ford 9" rear end with one of the axle outputs missing. Daneuser made some of the older Ford posthole diggers. If they are still in business they may still have auger bits.

I took mine to the local welding shop and had some made. In my case cheeper than new.

I had an allis auger that had a 4 inch taper from top to bottom. new teeth didn't help much.

I had a similar problem. What I did was welded two peaces of square stock to the center point and heated them and twisted and welded them so as to rebuild the flutes. Then ground them to contour and reground the point to displace the force. Then I took and welded two (2) tooth holders off a small Case backhoe onto the large flute where the old cutting edge used to bolt on. I attached two teeth and WOW. cant hardly keep it from digging. As said below New cutting teeth is the way to go . If you cant find one that fits get whats close and drill a new bolt hole or they can be made from old plow shares etc. No matter what you do with the ground hard and dry this time of yr. it`s not gona dig like springtime .

You must get rid of the bottom ---
flat spot----It is probably riding on a blunt flat spot. If you cut the back edge off on the bottom of your bit, It will then put all the weight / pressure on the cutting edge again.

Be darn carfull if you are holding it down with even a post as things happen pretty fast. I know of to differnet farmers that got messed up doing what you did.

I would guess that a welder and a cutting torch is all you would need for putting a different bit on it. There are numerous builders of post hole diggers, just make sure your bit is as big as the drill or a little bigger.

I probably would get a bit either double or single that has a very severe point on it as it will not bounce around when starting a hole.

The cutting teeth on the end of the auger should be replaceable. I would take one off and take it to my local impliment dealer and see if he can match them up. I replaced the teeth on my auger recently and it was not expensive.
