You are thinking right. It won't work. Maybe you would have patience enough to fight through an acre or two but if you have any thing more by end of day you will be ready to kill yourself if you haven't died from heart attack from crawling on and off unplugging plow.

see if you can find a disk turning plow. you'll be a lot happier with it in any kind of rough stubble like corn stalks. you'll find with a moldboard plow you'll be piling the trash up all over the field. if you can't find that type plow i'd disk it at least twice, once with the row and then at an angle to the row (around 30 deg) to slice the trash up as much as possible before trying to break it.

Ron,

I haven't plowed corn stalks in a long time, but in addition to what has been said, I have also had some luck just trailing a long piece of #6 or #8 bare wire off the coulter shaft, back past the plow bottom. The trailing end of the wire gets covered by the turned dirt creating a tight guide wire to help hold the trash down so it doesn't tangle around the plow bottom as easily. It isn't fool-proof, but it helps.

We use an old little genious (maybe a wonder) plow every so often, it works just fine in our conditions. We chop the corn off but some fields still have lots of weeds and other stuff, and it still plows under prety good.

we used to chop stalks with a mccormick two row chopper and the moldboard the stalks under. be sure you have coulters on the plow, it helps cut the trash so the plow doesnt plug up.

Chopped and maybe disked to get some dirt on top of some of the residue to hold it in place.
