Can someone tell me what would cause the shaft off the tractor to turn extremely fast but the blades hardly spin at all?

Thanks!

I have been given a 901 mower that is in very bad shape. I would like to rebuild it. Do you have any pictures what one looks like? I am sure that many things are missing. Thank you Bob

Thanks for the info. I found a place on the internet that sells replacement disks and a spring kit (which I don't know what that is for sure). Is is possible for a person to fix this or is it a job for the pros? I got the clutch off of the mower but I can't get that huge nut off the clutch. I wonder if it needs a special tool.

Also, I found that the seal is shot in the front of the gear box. I found a replacement but I need to know if it is something that needs to be pressed in as I have no way of doing that myself.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

the big nut has a small allen headed set screw that needs to be backed out before you can turn the big nut . the set screw keeps the nut from loosening while operating . parts are available from from ford/new holland dealer . if you can prize the old seal out you can just drive he new seal in . try driving a punch or screw driver in the old seal to prize out .

Thank you for all the help.

I got the shaft out of the gear box. The retaining ring in front of the bearing is broken in two. I guess that's what was allowing the gear to slide forward on the shaft and not engage the gear on the deck very much.

I ordered the parts today. Thanks for the info about the seal. I didn't know if it needed to be pressed in or not. The old one came out in pieces but I got it out.

Over 40 years old and the only thing shot inside is a 79 cent ring. I have no idea how long the seal has been out. These things are tough built.

Do you think 90w gear oil is OK to put back in the gear box once I get it on?
