These balers can make as good a bale as a open troath baler, but will need some major mods to do that, as i have done to a 605 D, wich is similair. unless you have good mechanical skills to do that,you would be better of to leave them alone.

We need pictures of your baler. Due to others that were not forthright with their claims,you will have to produce some pictures of the front of the baler, including the pickup and starter roller.
If you are going to sell kits to modify these closed throat balers, you will have to purchase product liability insurance. Vermeer will send you a letter informing you that you can not use their name and you are totally liable for any claims once any modifications are made.

I bought a new 605C in 1976. If conditions were just right, it ran well, and made good bales. However, if the product was slightly too dry or slightly too wet, they were a genuine pain. This was particularly true with corn stalks. The factory updates improved it some, but it still was difficult. One of the later models which were open throat were much more trouble-free.

What's wrong with them in corn stalks? I do not put up much hay (very little this year) and am planing on roll'n some corn stalks in a few weeks for the fist time. Is there a trick to it or one of them things that just can't be done? I bought one, I needed a baler right then. It was not too bad for I need. Found one at auction for $350, figured the belts were worth more than that and it runs better than my old one. I have kept both running and when somthing breaks, just swap and fix after hay is up. If I had much more hay I would up grade but for around 100 bale a year I can't drop a few more grand.

I really struggled to make 10 cornstalk bales with my 605F a couple years ago.

Then I found out my neighbor with 2yr old newest model New Holland baler also struggled to make cornstalk bales.

They can be difficult. Other years it goes some better - tho never 'good'.

I can get a few bales with a small windrow & driving very slowly. Stalks like to pack in the corners of the pickup, & create a blocked pickup.

Wouldn't want to do it for a living.....

That the auction by Aitken, the 22nd? Pictured one looks pretty old- you'd want an open throat to have a good machine- F or later models. They are good and popular balers, but get better with each series.

Never used a C but from what I hear they are not too good. IMO the first really good open throat Vermeer baler was the F series. G and H series are an improvement on the F. 504 ND 505 I series are much better along with 605J series.
