i have and old sidewinder brush hog that needs new u-joints in the driveshaft . the ones in it have no name on them just a number 598 on one side and USA 1 on the other. any way to figure out what i need.

they do not have needle bearings in the caps. just a smooth machined surface. anyway i broke one today or rather lost a cap. I fear our one horse town auto parts store will give me that dumb ,deer in the headlight look when i take it in there.

Measure the cup diameter and the distance across the caps from outside to outside on the caps. If it's square shaft then it's standard sizes; any other shaft is likely metric, and the cup size will be metric. I use a digital vernier caliper that converts from standard to metric.
With that in hand, call a farm equipment dealer that sells driveline parts and tell them what you have. They'll get you a cross kit. I don't think it will be a problem.

johns48jdb,yes there are older equipment that the u-joints have no needles. Rhino(Servis) rotary mowers and whirlwind terracers were built with that type of u-joint. One may be able to get a u-joint from Rhino Equip. in Seguin,Tx

guess i'll see if i can find a sidewinder dealer online.

And this is also the first time i have seen a U-joint that didn't have needle bearings in the cap. But it is the way these are made.

Sidewinder is still in business. Have you tried them? I think they are a standard part and you should be abler to find them at an autoparts or implement dealer.

Let your fingers do the walking BEFORE you make that 50 mile drive with gas near $3 a gallon!

Did you search for FMC Sidewinder located in Minden La? Also might try a Tisco dealer.I remember 2 different size ag joints without brgs about 40 years ago. The number was like 1FR or something similar.

never saw a u joint that didn't have needle bearings in it. are you sure thats what you have. there is probaby a replacement for it with needles. u joints are some what standadized. my local ford dealer keeps a good stock of them and there is actually places that do nothing but u joints and pillow block drives.

Yeah, they make 'em without needles in them. Usually light duty stuff. My NI hayrake has 'em in the PTO shaft. Was able to get replacement for mine from NAPA dealer. He measured old one, and found one almost exactly right. Had to shorten the length of the x piece slightly with a grinder to make 'em fit the yoke however.

went to parts house they sent me to tractor dealer. He knew exactly what i needed, only he didn't have any and didnt know when he could get them. Had them on order for 1 1/2 weeks already. So i just bought a new driveshaft with modern u-joints.

As far as light duty u-joints, that old style has been threw the ringer and back. If the allis 170 could ride it over that brush hog was cutting it.Probably the original one it came with.
