I think I'm looking for a used springtooth harrow, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm after. I hear about harrow 'sections' and old 'horse harrows', but I'm not sure of the different designs, if any, and how they are measured. How much would one expect to pay for something usable to pull behind my D17? They have always looked like something fairly simple from afar, but now that I'm interested, I guess I need some details.

Thanks CliffordPaul

Depends on the make and model for width of sections, some will have 1 runner between sections and are generaly newer and others will have 2 runners between sections. The width will varry from 2 1/2 feet to 4 1/2 feet depending on make and model. the 1 runer will not plug the runner like the 2 runner will if you get a corn stalk root cought between. For difference between horse and tractor tractor are generaly heavier and with the levers to the front for adjustment as you step off tractor without going around harrow, horse harrows were designed with the levers in back as that is where the driver of the horses walked driving the team and he did not have to go around the harrow and between it and the team to adjust, more of a safty factor with horses than a problem for either type with a tractor and some harrows they can be put either place. And I like to run a spring tooth harrow to loosen ground in tandem with a spike tooth harrow to level. Very seldem would just use one or the other. And some had a built it spike tooth harrow on the back of the spring tooth sections. Price would varry so much depending on type, size and location would be impossible to give a good price estimate. I would say go for a JD in either a 4 - 3' section or a 3 - 4' section for 12' total for your tractor if you want to make time and Deere still has the runners avaible for them and are easy to repair if needed. Try to find one with good runners as the runners are very expencive.

I typically like spike tooth harrows better. Depends what you want to do tho. Spring works too. Spike will bust up clods a bit better.

They seem to be 4-5 feet wide per section, 4 section to 6 section would work depending how fast you want to go?

Some you drag anywhere, some have carts they fold up onto to wheel from place to place. Got for scrap iron to $700, depends who shows up at the auction & which type....
